Child Custody Evaluations

Child custody evaluations are in-depth, court-involved assessments designed to assist in determining custody and visitation arrangements that serve the best interests of the child. These evaluations are comprehensive in scope and consider a wide range of factors, including each parent’s psychological functioning, parenting capacity, co-parenting dynamics, the child’s developmental and emotional needs, and the quality of parent-child relationships. The process also explores any concerns related to abuse, neglect, domestic violence, substance use, or other issues that may impact the child’s safety or well-being.

At Restorative Pathways, we approach child custody evaluations with sensitivity, objectivity, and a child-centered lens. The process involves clinical interviews with each parent and the child (when appropriate), psychological testing, observation of parent-child interactions, and extensive collateral interviews with professionals and other individuals involved in the child’s life (such as teachers, therapists, and extended family). We also review relevant documentation, including school records, court records, and prior evaluations or treatment summaries.

Because of the depth and complexity of this process, child custody evaluations typically take several weeks to complete, with face-to-face time totaling 8–12 hours or more, depending on the needs of the case. At the conclusion of the evaluation, a thorough written report is provided—generally within 4–6 weeks—outlining findings, impressions, and recommendations regarding custody, visitation, and any therapeutic or supportive services that may be beneficial to the family.

At Restorative Pathways, our goal is to provide balanced, research-informed evaluations that highlight the best interests of the child, while respecting the role and capacity of each parent. Our recommendations are guided by clinical insight, developmental knowledge, and legal standards for custody determinations.
